Lifescript Health Bistro Blog: DYI Yogurt

My biggest compaint about yogurt is that it's packed with sugar. Even plain, non-fat yogurt is choked in sugar - it has more than 10 grams of sugar per serving! And it's flavorless! I opt for Greek yogurt, which is thicker, creamier and has less sugar (about 6 grams per serving).

Can't wait to try your yogurt recipe, Vani! I'll use a low-sugar milk:)

where do you find Greek yogurt, i've seen many recipes calling for greek yogurt?

Hi Shayne! Trader Joe's carries Greek yogurt ($2.99 for a 12-ounce tub of plain Greek yogurt), and I've also seen it at health food stores, such as Whole Foods.

If you look at the ingredients of unsweetened yogurt, you'll find there are NO added sugars. The sugars listed under "sugars" are natural milk sugars-it is part of the milk itself, and is not a processed sugar. It is generally Lactose- milk sugar! Unless you are lactose intolerant, it is a healthy thing!
Greek yogurt is lower in lactose (and also more expensive) because of the way it's made-- it is, in essence "drained" through a strainer. You can actually do that yourself with regular yogurt (but who has time?!)

This sounds great, Vani! Thanks for sharing your grandmother's "secret recipe"! Like Nicole, I like that you can control the sugar content and ingredients (and avoid the food coloring silliness).

That's so true - each job you have introduces you to a new realm of subjects that you'll inevitably obsess over. Mochi is a doll! Little doggies usually can't run for very long, but if she can go for what seems like 25 miles, you may have the Marion Jones of shih-tzus/yorkies on your hands. Replace that purple bow with a sweatband - she's a track star!
